Sunset at Grand Canal

Light installation for the 81st Venice International Film Festival - Italy

The light of Venice has fascinated and inspired countless artists over the centuries, from Canaletto to Turner, from Monet to Whistler. These masters sought to capture in their paintings the unique quality of Venetian light, which reflects on the water of the canals and gives the city an ethereal and enchanted atmosphere.

“Sunset at Canal Grande,” the light installation designed by the Mandalaki studio for the Venice Film Festival, fits into this artistic tradition by using modern technology to evoke the magical essence of the golden hour, transferring it to the urban fabric through the reproduction of the colors and shades of a sunset projected onto the facade of Sina Centurion Palace on the Grand Canal. The projection recreates the warm and enveloping tones of the sunset, interacting with the architecture and the water, an element that gives the work a concept of dynamism through its reflections and ripples.

Nowadays, the growth of cities is increasingly rapid, and the human pressure on the environment is ever more evident, making it essential to critically analyze our impact on the urban ecosystem and the need to adopt more sustainable approaches to ensure a greater presence of natural elements. “Sunset at Canal Grande” is therefore not just an artistic intervention but a manifesto for sustainable urbanization and harmonious coexistence between man and nature, stimulating reflections and dialogues that can inspire concrete actions to create more sustainable urban environments.
